Hwaseong Haenggung Palace

This is the largest temporary palace used by kings during the Joseon Dynasty. It was the residence of King Jeongjo when he visited his father's tomb. The architecture is stunning, and the palace grounds often host traditional performances and martial arts demonstrations.

Tip: Try to arrive by 11:00 AM to catch the spectacular martial arts performance (Muye 24-gi) at the front gate.

Kabojung

Suwon is famous for Galbi (marinated short ribs), and Kabojung is widely considered one of the best spots in the city. It is a massive establishment serving premium quality beef with an incredible array of side dishes (banchan) that fill the entire table.

Tip: Order the 'Lunch Special' (Jeongsik) available on weekdays and weekends; it offers a full meal at a better price point than the dinner menu.

After a heavy lunch, walk it off along the fortress walls. Stretching 5.7km, you don't have to walk the whole thing, but the section from Paldalmun Gate up to Mount Paldal offers the best exercise and views, while the flat sections near Hwahongmun are more leisurely.

Tip: You can take the 'Hwaseong Tourist Trolley' if you prefer not to walk, but booking tickets in advance online or early in the morning is essential as they sell out fast.

Flying Suwon

The highlight of the trip! This tethered helium balloon lifts you 150 meters into the air for a bird's-eye view of the entire fortress and the modern city skyline. It is especially magical during the 'blue hour' just after sunset.

Tip: Check the 'Flying Suwon' Instagram or website before heading there; they suspend operations if the wind speed is too high. Queue times can be long on weekends, so arrive 30 mins before your desired flight time.

Jinmi Tongdak

Located in the famous Suwon Fried Chicken Street, Jinmi Tongdak is a legendary institution. Unlike the saucy global chains, they specialize in traditional iron-pot fried chicken that is incredibly crispy. They serve it with dipping sauces and pickled radishes.

Tip: Order the 'Half and Half' (Ban-ban) to try both the original fried chicken and the sweet-spicy glazed chicken. Don't be intimidated by the line; the turnover is very fast.

Banghwasuryujeong

End your night with a stroll to this beautiful pavilion overlooking the Yongyeon Pond. At night, the pavilion is illuminated, creating a stunning reflection on the water. It is a popular spot for locals to have picnics and take romantic photos.

Tip: This spot is extremely photogenic at night. Bring a small mat if you want to sit by the pond and enjoy the cool evening breeze before heading back to Seoul.
